Exercise guidelines for individuals with medical or health limitations

* Lower-back pain

The extra benefits stem from using the whole-body approach required in resistance training. "We'll strengthen your entire body and by doing that, you will decreased the fatigue people felt throughout the day.

"With out lower back discomfort you will be able to perform your activities of daily living, better..."

* Coronary artery disease

Regular physical activity reduces the risk of CAD. How effective is exercise in treating it ?

In the early 1960's, physicians began experimenting with getting patients up and out of bed soon after a cardiac event, and the results were very favorable.

Some physicians advise patients with coronary artery disease to stay in bed, but other cardiac patients who stay mobile, experience fewer complications related to bed rest.

All clients recovering from myocardial infraction, cardiac surgery, or other cardiac procedures benefit when physicians consider a supervised cardiac rehabilitation program.

It is best for individuals with a history of coronary artery disease to first complete a supervised cardiac rehabilitation program before starting an exercise program.

* Hypertension

Exercise is recognized as an important part of therapy for controlling hypertension. The stress relief clients receive during the training sessions helps them sleep better and increase a healthy appetite.

It is known that regular aerobic exercise reduces both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and regular physical activity reduces cardiac output and heart complications.

Since many hypertensive individuals with peripheral vascular disease is that it helps to lower overall coronary artery disease risk, as well as improve overall cardiovascular endurance.

* Peripheral Vascular Disease One of the primary benefits of exercise for individuals with peripheral vascular disease is that it helps to lower overall coronary artery disiase risk, as well as improve overall cardiovascular endurance.

Individuals with peripheral vascular diseas should do a complete medical evaluation before starting an exercise program.

* Diabetes

The role of exercise in controlling glucose levels has not been well demonstrated. Even so, individuals with Type 1 Diabetes can improve their functional capacity and improve insulin receptor sensitivity when following a program of regular exercise and physical activity.

Exercise plays an important role in controlling Type 2 Diabetes, because it reduces both cholesterol levels and weight. Higher than normal blood fat levels put diabetes clients at a greater risk for heart disease.

Before beginning an exercise program, clients need to speak with a Diabetes Educator or a physician to develop a balanced program of diet, exercise, and medication.

* Asthma

Most individuals with controlled asthma will benefit from regular exercise ( which makes it easy to reduce the need to breathe hard during various tasks, such as climbing stairs or swimming ).

Regular exercise makes it easier for individuals with asthma to participate in normal daily activities with less shortness of breath and fewer asthma attacks.

* Osteoporosis

While the role of exercise in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is not completely understood, it is known that physical stress determines the strength of bone.

Physical activity is recommended for prevention of osteoporosis by the physicians of a client, because weight bearing exercise either retards the loss of, or increases, bone mass.

Even individuals who have led sedentary lives can increase bone mass by becoming more active.

* Arthritis

Exercise is recommended for individuals with arthritis to help prevent muscle strength and joint mobility, improve functional capabilities, relieve pain and stiffness, and improve overall physical conditioning.

My fitness programs for individuals with arthritis are carefully designed in conjunction with your physician or physical therapists, and are 100% based on your health status.

My experience with clients with arthritis is that they complain of fatigue and some discomfort following exercise. For this reason my programs need to achieve the proper balance of rest, immobilization of affected joints, and appropriate exercise to reduce the severity of inflamation.

* Older Adults

For older adults my fitness program combines endurance, flexibility, and balance training, as well as muscle strengthening and joint mobilization.

My clients enjoy low-impact exercise and the encouragement to become more physically active in all of their daily activities, like walking to the store or using the stairs. It helps to bend, move and stretch to keep joints flexible.

I have found that older clients have more difficult time exercising in extreme environmental conditions, and I usually design a program that can normally be done while enjoying the outdoors.

I recommend to my elderly clients with arthritis or poor joint mobility to participate in non-weightbearing activities such as cycling, swimming, and chair and floor exercises.

* Pregnancy Many women are more flexible during pregnancy due to joint laxity. With the release of the hormone relaxing, joints become looser, increasing the risk of injury during exercise.

I always recommend them to be conservative when exercising since body temperature regulation is more difficult for them.

Most of my pregnant clients are able to continue exercising during their first trimester - without much difficulty.

I help my clients understand the risks and potential benefits associated with exercising during pregnancy.

And I always make the decision to exercise in conjunction with their physicians carefully monitoring their recommended guidelines.

A high percentage of my pregnant clients renew their training programs within four to eight weeks after pregnancy. That must be the happiest workout, to work out with your baby.

* Children

Teaching Physical Education And Training My Clients in Ewa With Health Concerns And Special Needs Is Very Gratifying.

One of my keys to success is to maintain contact with each client's physician and health care team.

I always obtain written guidelines before proceeding with exercise training. And I also keep programs more conservative than they would be for clients without health concerns.

This has been an area of tremendous professional growth for me. And I continue to investigate educational opportunities to maximize the safety and effectiveness of my services in Ewa Beach.
